In the first half of 2024, the NHRC announced 56 new varieties of food additives accepted for declaration, of which 10 were not licensed and 28 were postponed for reexamination, details of which are shown in Table 1.

Public Consultation on New Varieties of Food Additives

In the first half of 2024, the National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment (NCFSRA) released new varieties of food additives for public consultation 3 times, involving 20 products. These products for public opinion include 3 food additives with expanded scope of use, 2 food fortification agents with expanded scope of use, 3 new varieties of food additives, 7 new varieties of food fortification agents, 4 new varieties of enzymes for food industry, and 1 new variety of flavors for food, details are shown in Table 2.

In the first half of 2024, a total of 12 new varieties of food additives were approved by the NHRC (Announcement No. 2 of 2024), including 2 new varieties of food additives, 2 new varieties of food nutritional fortifiers, 3 new varieties of enzymes for food industry, and 5 varieties of food additives with expanded scope of use, details of which are shown in Table 3.

In the first half of 2024, the National Health Commission announced 56 new food additive varieties accepted for filing, an increase of 47% compared to the same period last year, of which 18% were not licensed and 50% required supplementary materials.

If there are some deficiencies in the submitted materials, such as missing information, unclear presentation, etc., it leads to supplementation or clarification of the materials, which indirectly increases the time for review. In the face of such a review trend, it is recommended that enterprises should pay more attention to the in-depth research and assessment of product safety and technology when preparing the materials, so as to reduce the number of corrections and speed up the approval process of the products.
