Calcium Acetate Formula, Properties and Sourcing (CAS 62-54-4)

Calcium Acetate (CAS 62-54-4), also called calcium diacetate or calcium ethanoate, is the calcium salt of acetic acid. Its anhydrous formula is C4H6CaO4, commonly written Ca(C2H3O2)2, and its anhydrous molecular weight is 158.166 g/mol. Buyers must identify the anhydrous or hydrate form and qualify the material through a current specification, analytical methods, lot COA, SDS and application-specific requirements.

What is the formula for Calcium Acetate?

The formula Ca(C2H3O2)2 shows one calcium ion associated with two acetate ions. The elemental formula C4H6CaO4 describes the same anhydrous composition. A formula alone is not a complete purchasing identity: a buyer should also match CAS 62-54-4, the chemical name, structure, hydration state and applicable analytical tests.

“Calcium ethanoate” is a systematic-name variant of calcium acetate. It should not be confused with calcium propionate, calcium citrate, calcium lactate or other calcium salts that have different formulas, properties and regulatory records.

Anhydrous versus monohydrate Calcium Acetate

The EU E263 specification distinguishes anhydrous Calcium Acetate from the monohydrate. This difference changes formula weight and affects how assay, water and concentration calculations are interpreted. A quotation or COA that states only “Calcium Acetate” without form and basis can be ambiguous.

Question Why it matters Evidence to request
Which physical form is supplied? Anhydrous and monohydrate have different formula weights and water context Controlled product name, form and specification scope
What is the assay basis? A result may be reported as supplied, dried or on an anhydrous basis Method, calculation formula, units and acceptance criterion
How is water measured? Loss on drying and water-specific methods are not interchangeable Named method, conditions, limit and applicable lot result
Which molecular weight is used? 158.166 and 176.18 apply to different forms Form-matched calculation and buyer approval

Reference properties are not a supplier specification

Commission Regulation (EU) No 231/2012 describes anhydrous E263 as a white, hygroscopic, bulky crystalline solid and allows the monohydrate as needles, granules or powder. It also publishes identity and purity fields for food-additive E263. Those regulatory values are useful reference context, but they do not prove that a current Longchang lot complies with E263 or with any buyer’s specification.

A current supplier specification should identify the material form, assay basis, methods, units and acceptance limits. A lot COA should report results against that approved specification. Neither a literature property table nor CAS 62-54-4 replaces those controlled documents.

How Calcium Acetate uses should be screened

Food regulations in the United States and European Union contain Calcium Acetate records, but permitted technical functions, food categories and conditions depend on the jurisdiction. A chemical name or E-number does not authorize unrestricted use. Read the Calcium Acetate E263 food-use and regulatory guide for market-specific examples and qualification questions.

DailyMed also lists named finished Calcium Acetate capsules as prescription phosphate binders. Those labels apply to their finished dosage forms, strengths and approvals. They do not turn an unspecified raw material into an approved medicine, establish pharmaceutical grade or justify patient-use instructions on a supplier page.

For any industrial or formulation use outside a cited regulatory record, the buyer should validate the technical function, impurity profile, hydration state, process conditions, performance, safety controls and destination-market obligations. A generic use list is only a screening prompt.

Frequently asked questions

What is the chemical formula of Calcium Acetate?

The anhydrous formula is C4H6CaO4, commonly written Ca(C2H3O2)2.

Is Calcium Acetate the same as calcium ethanoate?

Yes. Calcium ethanoate is another name for the calcium salt of acetic acid identified by CAS 62-54-4.

Does CAS 62-54-4 prove food or pharmaceutical grade?

No. CAS identifies the substance record. Grade, regulatory suitability, manufacturing controls and lot compliance require separate current evidence.

Can the old 99.0–100.5% field be treated as a current specification?

No. The legacy page did not identify a current controlled specification, method set, lot or effective date. Request current documents for the material being evaluated.
