Forekomsten og d\u00f8deligheden af lungekr\u00e6ft er h\u00f8jere hos m\u00e6nd end hos kvinder i de fleste lande og regioner. I udviklingslande som Kina er forekomsten af lungekr\u00e6ft ogs\u00e5 gradvist stigende p\u00e5 grund af den fortsatte stigning i tobaksforbruget og andre faktorer. Forskning har vist, at ikke-sm\u00e5cellet lungekr\u00e6ft (NSCLC) tegner sig for over 80% af lungekr\u00e6fttilf\u00e6ldene og har en 5-\u00e5rs overlevelsesrate p\u00e5 mindre end 15%, hvor storcellet lungekr\u00e6ft er en af dem. Samtidig kan reguleringen af cellemigration og -invasion med saponiner VII fra Polygonatum sibiricum v\u00e6re relateret til dens h\u00e6mning af matrixmetalloproteinase MMPs. MMP'er er en klasse af enzymer, der nedbryder ekstracellul\u00e6r matrix (ECM), og som er overudtrykt i forskellige maligne tumorer. De fremmer tumorcellev\u00e6kst, migration, invasion og angiogenese. MMP-2 og MMP-9 er to af de vigtigste MMP'er, som begge har den funktion at nedbryde ECM og fremme tumormigration og -invasion. Denne unders\u00f8gelse indikerer, at den h\u00e6mmende effekt af Zhonglou saponin VII p\u00e5 lungekr\u00e6ftcellers migration og invasion er relateret til dens regulering af MMP-2 og MMP-9-ekspression. Samtidig kan Zhonglou saponin VII ogs\u00e5 regulere apoptose-relaterede proteiner. CAD (caspase activated decxyri bonuclease) er et enzym, der nedbryder nukleart DNA under apoptose, mens ICAD (inhibitor of CAD) har en h\u00e6mmende effekt p\u00e5 det. Under normale forhold findes begge enzymer i cytoplasmaet og opretholder cellernes normale fysiologiske aktiviteter.
