De findes i forskellige tokimbladede planter som Scrophularia og Rehmannia, Gentiana i Gentianaceae, Gardenia og Scutellaria i Rubiaceae og Lonicera japonica i Lonicera japonica. If\u00f8lge ufuldst\u00e6ndige statistikker er over 800 typer iridoidforbindelser blevet isoleret og strukturelt identificeret fra planter, hvoraf de fleste er glykosidkomponenter.
