Men traditionelle ekstraktionssystemer indeholder ofte brandfarlige, flygtige, giftige og meget energiforbrugende organiske reagenser som ethylenglycol, N-methylpyrrolidon og N-methylmorpholin. Forskning har vist, at de typer ioniske v\u00e6sker, der kan fase det ioniske v\u00e6ske-vand-blandingssystem, omfatter 1-butyl-3-methylimidazoliumhexafluoroborat, tetrabutylphosphintrifluoracetat, tetrabutylphosphoniumacetat osv.
