De spiller en vigtig rolle i det humorale immunforsvar. AMP'er har st\u00e6rk alkalinitet, termisk stabilitet og bredspektret antibakteriel aktivitet og har ogs\u00e5 en vis dr\u00e6bende effekt p\u00e5 svampe, vira, parasitter og kr\u00e6ftceller. P\u00e5 grund af deres omfattende biologiske aktivitet, is\u00e6r deres evne til at dr\u00e6be visse l\u00e6gemiddelresistente patogener, betragtes AMP'er som ideelle alternativer til antibiotika og har en enorm anvendelsesv\u00e6rdi og et stort markedspotentiale inden for omr\u00e5der som dyrehold, f\u00f8devarer, medicin og kosmetik.<br \/>\nSort soldatflue, ogs\u00e5 kendt som Hermetia illucens L., er en art vandflue i Diptera-familien, der er vidt udbredt over hele verden. Den er hjemmeh\u00f8rende i Nord- og Sydamerika og har en kort livscyklus og hurtig reproduktion. Dens larver f\u00e5r prim\u00e6rt n\u00e6ring ved at spise organisk affald som f.eks. r\u00e5dnende organisk materiale, dyreaff\u00f8ring eller k\u00f8kkenaffald og kan effektivt omdanne det til insektprotein. Aff\u00f8ring behandlet med sorte soldatfluer kan blive til organisk g\u00f8dning af h\u00f8j kvalitet. Da sorte soldatfluelarver uds\u00e6ttes for h\u00f8je koncentrationer af skadelige stoffer under fodringen, f\u00e5r komplekse milj\u00f8faktorer dem til at producere immunaktive stoffer som AMP'er for at modst\u00e5 patogene mikroorganismer. Salmonella og andre patogener kan dog n\u00e6sten ikke p\u00e5vises i sorte soldatfluelarver, s\u00e5 de bruges ogs\u00e5 som foder. Sammenlignet med traditionelle antibiotika har de store fordele og har brede anvendelsesmuligheder inden for foder, f\u00f8devarer, medicin og kosmetik og er blevet et af de nuv\u00e6rende forskningsomr\u00e5der for bioaktive peptider. Den naturlige udvinding af antimikrobielle peptider fra sorte soldaterfluer er imidlertid vanskelig, omkostningerne ved kemisk syntese er for h\u00f8je, og ekspressionsniveauet for genteknologi er lavt. Dens fremstillingsteknologi begr\u00e6nser dens produktion i stor skala.
