If\u00f8lge den seneste version af IDF diabetes Atlas udgivet af International diabetes Alliance er den r\u00e5 pr\u00e6valens af diabetes (20-79 \u00e5r) i verden 9,3%, og omkring 463 millioner voksne har diabetes, som er ved at blive den tredjest\u00f8rste dr\u00e6ber af menneskers sundhed efter kr\u00e6ft og kardiovaskul\u00e6re og cerebrovaskul\u00e6re sygdomme.<br \/>\nFlere og flere unders\u00f8gelser har bekr\u00e6ftet, at patogenesen af diabetes er relateret til forskellige signalveje, s\u00e5som insulinsignalvej, kulhydratmetabolismevej, endoplasmatisk retikulumstressrelateret vej, vej, der involverer insulinudskillelse og PPAR-regulering, og kromatinmodifikationsvej.
