Den er hovedsageligt udbredt i \u00f8stasiatiske lande som Kina, Rusland, Japan og den koreanske halv\u00f8. Imiteret s\u00f8agurk er en af de mest n\u00e6ringsrige arter blandt pighuderne og ogs\u00e5 den mest v\u00e6rdifulde art blandt s\u00f8agurkerne. Det er en traditionel kinesisk f\u00f8devare og l\u00e6geurt, kendt som \"ginsengens krone\". S\u00f8agurk er en af de vigtigste \u00f8konomiske arter inden for havbrug i det nordlige Kina. I 2021 var dyrkningsomr\u00e5det for s\u00f8agurk i Kina 247400 hektar med et udbytte p\u00e5 222700 tons og en fr\u00f8planteproduktion p\u00e5 60,1 milliarder hoveder. V\u00e6rdien af hele s\u00f8agurk-industrik\u00e6den er omkring 9 milliarder amerikanske dollars.<br \/>\nS\u00f8agurken best\u00e5r af sin kropsv\u00e6g og sine indre organer. S\u00f8agurkens indre organer best\u00e5r hovedsageligt af tarmv\u00e6ggen, forplantningskirtlen og \u00e5ndedr\u00e6tstr\u00e6et. Forskning har vist, at s\u00f8agurkens kropsv\u00e6g er rig p\u00e5 n\u00e6ringsstoffer som protein, aminosyrer, fedtsyrer, mineraler og vitaminer. Derudover indeholder s\u00f8agurkens kropsv\u00e6g ogs\u00e5 triterpensaponiner, s\u00f8agurkepolysaccharider, kollagen, s\u00f8agurkepeptider, fenoler, cerebrosider, sphingosinlignende stoffer og andre bioaktive stoffer, som har potentielle antioxidant-, anti-cancer-, antihypertensiv-, anti-inflammatorisk-, antitrombotisk-, antidiabetes-, anti-fedme- og antibakterielle aktiviteter samt h\u00f8j ern\u00e6ringsm\u00e6ssig og medicinsk v\u00e6rdi. P\u00e5 nuv\u00e6rende tidspunkt fokuserer den meste forskning inden for sundhedspleje og medicin p\u00e5 at udvikle s\u00f8agurkens funktioner ved at bruge dens kropsv\u00e6gge som r\u00e5materiale, og der er relativt lidt udvikling af s\u00f8agurkeindvoldenes funktioner. Men i s\u00f8agurkeindustrien har s\u00f8agurkeorganer ikke f\u00e5et tilstr\u00e6kkelig opm\u00e6rksomhed og mangler dybdeg\u00e5ende forskning, hvilket resulterer i ringe udvikling og udnyttelse af s\u00f8agurkeorganer, hvilket f\u00f8rer til deres direkte bortskaffelse.
