National Announcement

On December 22, 2009, the Ministry of Health (MOH) issued the Announcement on the Approval of Tea Seed Oil and 7 Other Items as New Resource Foods (No. 18 of 2009), formally approving 7 items as new resource foods, including Tea Seed Oil, Salt Algae and its Extracts, Fish Oil and its Extracts, Glycerol Di-Ester Oils, Dilute Proteins, Lacto-Mineral Salts, Milk Alkaloidal Proteins, and so on.

The source, process, serving size, quality requirements, and scope of use of milk mineral salts are shown in the table below:

Functions of milk mineral salts

(1) Calcium fortification function: supplements containing milk mineral salts show a trend of better bioavailability of calcium it shows an increase in bone mass and is an ideal source of dietary calcium.

(2) Enhancement of bone density: Studies have shown that not only is it possible to obtain an increase in bone density with milk mineral salts compared to other calcium sources (e.g., calcium acetate, etc.), but bone density continues to increase several years after supplementation with milk calcium, whereas the increase in bone density with supplementation with inorganic calcium is reversed when the supplementation is discontinued.

(3) Weight control: It has been found in studies that calcium, especially milk mineral salts, can play a role in consuming fat and reducing fat storage in the body while supplementing the body’s calcium deficiency.

(4) Reducing the incidence of other diseases: Studies on the relationship between calcium intake and certain diseases have shown that adequate calcium intake is beneficial to human health in many ways. Increasing calcium intake can reduce the risk of colon cancer, while calcium can inhibit high blood pressure and kidney stones.

Domestic and foreign application progress

Overseas: In 2000, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Office of Human Health replied to the milk mineral salt producers on milk mineral salt “is considered safe food (GRAS) statement response letter” in which it is stated that: milk mineral salt substance concentrate is produced through scientific production processes, for the general is considered safe food, and allow the The letter of response to the GRAS declaration states that Lacto Mineral Salt Substance Concentrate is produced in a scientifically based manufacturing process and is generally recognized as a safe food and allows the ingredient to be used as a source of calcium in fortified beverages, fortified foods and fortified dairy products.

In 2009, the Danish Board of Agriculture and Food responded to the “Statement on the use of milk mineral salts in foods for young children/older infant formulae” that milk mineral salts are safe and generally recognized food ingredients for dairy products and can be used in a wide range of food products, including infant and older infant formulae.

Milk mineral salts are used in many products abroad, such as Nestle Dancow brand children’s food, Japan’s Meiji high-calcium food series for infants and young children over 7 months, and South Korea’s Haitai toddler food.

Milk mineral salts have been used in liquid milk, calcium-added bread, cookies and other popular foods in China, while health food and functional food also widely use milk mineral salts as raw materials for calcium supplementation. The scope of use of milk mineral salt in China does not include baby food.
