On November 22, 2023, the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) announced the results of the 2023 academician co-option. 74 engineering and science experts were elected as academicians of CAE. Among them, three people in the field of food were elected as academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2023.

The co-option improved and perfected the nomination mechanism, academicians and national academic organizations can nominate candidates, 1 academician can only nominate 1 candidate. For the first time, the public release of the academician co-option guide, focusing on national strategic needs and discipline development layout, clear academician co-option field discipline direction. It is emphasized that the selection of academicians should adhere to the quality first, take significant contribution, academic level and moral integrity as the criteria, focus on the selection of academicians from the researchers who have been working in the front line of scientific research and engineering technology for a long time, and tilt towards the key areas of national urgent needs, emerging disciplines, interdisciplinary disciplines, major projects of the country, major scientific research tasks and the construction of major scientific and technological infrastructures. In the co-option, a mechanism for selection by external peer experts has been established.

From the elected academicians, the distribution of disciplines and age structure of the academician team were further optimized, involving 43 first-level disciplines, covering 78.2% of the disciplines in the academician co-option guide. The average age of the newly elected academicians is 58.2 years old, the youngest age is 48 years old, the oldest age is 76 years old, and 81.1% of them are 60 years old or below.

A number of leading talents from key fields such as manned spaceflight, nuclear power and modern agriculture, as well as from related cross-disciplinary fields such as artificial intelligence, intelligent manufacturing, biotechnology and new energy, were elected academicians. A number of outstanding engineering and technology experts who have long been working in the remote western and northeastern regions were elected.

After this election, there are 978 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
